80 minute patriots

The six nations is almost over for another year. The 80 minute patriots are about to use their fluffy pink cowboy hat one last time before returning to their default position of not caring about Wales, a region of the English empire that only exists to them for 80 minutes at a time sporadically throughout the year.

Some of these 80 minute patriots are a curious bunch. They usually espouse typical BritNat behaviour, hark back to the empire or simply denounce the very concept of self determination as extremist. They celebrate being "British" throughout sporting competitions and yet as soon as one of the "regions" of their precious country of Britain are playing a "foreign" team , all that goes out the window in typically hypocritical fashion.

Many of the people who attend the games are not rugby fans or sporting fans at all. They are event goers, just there for the occasion, in other words they only care about the piss up. And the next day, whilst nursing their hang over they go back to all the clichés assorted with the 80 minute patriots.

When Wales are winning they're happy, when they're losing they are still happy. Unless of course they have lost to England. For these ignorant BritNats only one thing matters. That age old cliché, "as long as we beat the English"... Immortalised by Kelly Jones from the Stereophonics via BBC Wales.

And then what? So we beat them, so we win the six nations. Then what? What if we hadn't lost to Ireland and we'd have won another grand slam to add to all the others. Then what? What if we had beaten France in the World Cup and then beaten New Zealand in the final. How in anyway does this make Wales even less worse off and even more exploited thanks to our own ignorance than we already are?

We really need to wake up and see what's happening to this country that so many of us pretend to care about depending on whether there's a rugby match on or not. Otherwise all these six nations, grandslams and anything else we achieve in the sporting arena is just a distraction. Surely winning at life is more important?

And winning at life is something that Scotland is currently doing, so we beat them in the rugby, again. And in a week or two we'll probably beat them in the football, again. But so what, maybe our football team can go on a winning streak that culminates with lifting the World Cup in Rio in 2014. A few months later Scotland has it's referendum on self determination. That's what I call winning at life! It makes winning at a game rather insignificant in comparison.

I'll leave you with a Welsh take on a classic quote from the film Trainspotting. Yes it's a bit sweary but so what? If you find a few swear words more offensive than the exploitation and extermination of our country then we really do have no hope at all.

Tweet this if you love Wales for more than 80 minutes at a time

  1. Absolutely right! If there were a six nations for the number of gutless, invertebrate, collaborators, the Welsh would win it every time. The majority would rather live off the inadequate crumbs from the South East of Englands table than be free and live off their own endeavours.

The true Welsh heroes who gave their lives and spent their lives fighting for Wales are bowing their heads in shame. I love Wales and support them in every sporting endeavour especially rugby. But I would gladly swap any number of Six nations Grand Slams, wins over England or World cups for a free Country and a Welsh government worthy of the name!

We will never improve our lot either economically or culturally until we realise only we can improve things by taking full responsibility for our own affairs. We could do with a national injection of self respect and true National pride, sonner rather than later!

  2. And have you noticed how many of these "England hating" Welsh rugger fans like Kelly (Leeds Utd supporter and friend of Wayne Rooney) Jones are armchair supporters of Man Utd, Liverpool or some other English team they have absolutely no connection with for the rest of the time?

    1. I know people that support Juventus, Bayern Munich, Roma and a few other teams. At club level, people follow a club side.

    2. I think the "England hating" Welsh rugger fans part of the sentence is key to their point. You don't have that many Italian hating Juve fans in Wales, do you?

  3. Now come on, when you say they, they, they, it would help your argument if you came up with some names ........ Carolyn Hitt perhaps? There's a lass who loves Welsh rugger yet wrapped herself in red, white and blue during the Olympics.

As for the English soccer teams ...... well they've got supporters all over the world and at least they play in their own league. Swansea and Cardiff fans get my goat, supporting teams that play in a foreign league and as for the England and Wales cricket team, well don't get me started.

  4. I'd love to sit on the roof of the Millenium with a snipers rifle, and anyone wearing a sparkly cowboy hat or one of those horrendous daffodil things that were purposely designed to make Welsh people look ridiculous, or any eejit repeatedly droning that mindless Max Boyce ditty would get it right between the eyes.
What happened to Calon Lan, Sospan Fach etc.?

The daffodil heads that fill the Millennium are the Welsh equivalent of "plastic paddies", but at least the paddies only appear once a year on March 17th.

    2. So you are against Welsh teams playing in a foreign league but you support an English team that plays in a foreign league?

  5. I agree about Hymns and Arias. It's lost on those who sing it today that it refers to a time when Welsh sporting crowds could indeed sing hymns and arias.

  6. What a god awful site. I, like many others, am BRITISH and WELSH. What narrow minded losers would want to deny people the opportunity to diversify and collaborate on cultural identity. Self centred haters on this site represent a tiny misguided spoilt minority of extremists.

I wonder if they are WELSH and European but choose not to be BRITISH because the democratic process of majority rule doesn't suit them.

Kindly crawl back under the rock from which you have appeared.

I do agree, however, that the national song needs to be re-written since it only represents a tiny minority of language butters. Time for a bilingual song.
