Saturday 20th April saw the Penybanc residents protest the plans to decimate their village with 289 new houses in order to meet the so called demand set out by the Labour run Welsh Government and aided by the Labour run Carmarthenshire County Council.
Around a hundred people turned out for the protest, mostly locals with some people from further afield. I myself came from a village a few valleys over and know that today this might be Penybanc but tomorrow it could easily be my village or yours. That is why it's important to stand together and fight the colonial exploitation of our country.
I was first made aware of the protest via the
facebook page created to advertise the event and also by a post by
Cneifiwr which explains the way the locals had been duped into believing they had been saved from one development only to have this new development come out of the blue. The protest itself was situated outside the village hall. There were speeches from the chairman of the protest group, Cymdeithas, the local Plaid Councillor as well as a pre-written speech read out on behalf of local MP Jonathan Edwards and local AM Rhodri Glyn Thomas.
Today it's Penybanc that faces the devastation this new development will bring. Tomorrow it will be another village, then another, then another. Soon it will be your village, your town or your suburb that is having houses it doesn't need and houses it doesn't want forced onto ever decreasing patches of land in order to match demand from across the border.

There is no need for the amount of houses that are proposed under this scheme unless there is a plan to re-settle hundreds of thousands of people from England into Wales.
ReplyDeleteThis is precisely the problem, in total there are around 300,000 homes "needed" in Wales. The last census shows that 90% of the population increase has come from migration. 300,000 homes could easily translate to an extra million people.
